Infrared vs. Traditional: An Honest Comparison

Two very different kinds of heat — and the right answer depends on your space, not the trend.

Ask ten people which sauna to buy and you'll get ten confident answers, most of them downstream of whatever the person bought themselves. It's a frustrating question to research because the two options aren't better and worse versions of the same thing. They're different experiences that happen to share a name.

Here's the honest version, including the parts that don't favor a sale.

The actual difference

A traditional sauna heats the room. You sit in hot air.

An electric or wood-burning heater warms a bed of stones, the stones warm the air, and the air — along with the wooden walls and benches — warms you. Air temperature typically runs around 150–195°F. Pour water over the stones and you get löyly: a burst of steam that briefly makes the room feel considerably hotter and gives Finnish sauna its character. Humidity is yours to control, session by session, ladle by ladle.

An infrared sauna heats you. The room stays comparatively cool.

Emitters radiate infrared energy that's absorbed directly by your body, so the cabin air only needs to reach around 120–150°F for you to sweat heavily. Most home units are far-infrared; full-spectrum models add near and mid wavelengths. There are no stones, no water, no steam — adding water isn't part of the design.

That single distinction — heating the air versus heating the body — drives almost every other difference worth knowing.

What each one feels like

This matters more than the spec sheets, and it's the part reviews consistently undersell.

Traditional is intense and immersive. The heat is on your skin immediately, breathing feels hot, and a session is usually shorter — perhaps 10 to 20 minutes per round, often across two or three rounds with cooling breaks between. Pouring water changes the room in seconds, which is part of the appeal: you're operating the sauna, not just sitting in one. It's also the more sociable version, and the one that smells like cedar and steam.

Infrared is gentler and more meditative. The air is breathable, so people who find traditional heat overwhelming — or who simply want to read for 35 minutes — often prefer it. The sweat builds more gradually but arrives thoroughly. It feels less like an event and more like a long, warm sit.

Neither is objectively better. But people who love one frequently find the other disappointing, which is worth knowing before spending thousands.

Two of these lines quietly decide most purchases.

Electrical. A traditional sauna generally needs a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician — a real line item, sometimes a significant one, and occasionally a non-starter in a condo or a finished basement far from the panel. Many infrared cabins plug into a normal outlet. If you're not prepared to involve an electrician, that narrows the decision considerably.

Heat-up time. Forty minutes of preheat sounds trivial in a showroom and becomes a real factor on a Tuesday in February. Infrared's shorter warm-up is a genuine advantage for consistency, and consistency is the entire game.

What the research actually says

This is where honest guides diverge from marketing, so let's be precise.

The strongest evidence involves traditional sauna. A long-running Finnish cohort study followed 2,315 middle-aged men for roughly two decades and found that more frequent sauna bathing was associated with lower rates of cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality — with the largest associations among those using a sauna four to seven times weekly. Later analyses extended similar associations to women and to other outcomes, and a Mayo Clinic Proceedings review summarized the broader body of evidence.

Three caveats belong right next to those numbers:

  1. These are observational studies. They show association, not proof of cause. People who sauna four to seven times a week may differ from once-a-week bathers in ways researchers can't fully adjust for — income, leisure time, general health.
  2. The population was Finnish, where sauna is woven into ordinary life. That's not automatically transferable.
  3. Frequency did the heavy lifting. The associations cluster among frequent users. A sauna used twice a month is not what was studied.

Infrared's evidence base is smaller and younger. It leans on shorter randomized trials in specific clinical populations — much of it stemming from Japanese “Waon therapy” research in patients with chronic heart failure and related conditions. The findings are directionally consistent with the traditional literature, but they are not equivalent in scale or duration.

The fair summary: traditional sauna has more and better long-term evidence behind it; infrared has promising but thinner evidence. That is a real point in traditional's favor — and it should be weighed against the fact that the sauna you'll actually use several times a week beats the one with better citations that sits cold because it takes 40 minutes to heat.

We'd also gently note what neither one is. Sauna is not a detox mechanism — that's the liver and kidneys' job — and it's not a weight-loss device; the scale moves after a session because you lost water, and it returns when you rehydrate. Any brand telling you otherwise is telling you something they can't support.

How to actually decide

Skip the comparison charts for a moment and answer five questions honestly.

1. What can your electrical panel do?
If a 240V circuit is impractical or unaffordable, infrared is the realistic path. Get an electrician's estimate before you fall in love with a cabin.

2. Indoors or outdoors?
Outdoor builds are overwhelmingly traditional. If you're picturing a cabin in the backyard with steam rolling off the roof in winter, you're picturing a traditional sauna.

3. Do you want steam, or do you want to sit and read?
If pouring water on hot stones sounds like the whole point, infrared will disappoint you every single session. If a long, calm, breathable sweat sounds better, the reverse is true.

4. How much time will you realistically give it?
Short windows favor infrared. Unhurried evenings and weekends favor traditional.

5. Who else is using it?
Traditional saunas seat groups comfortably and handle back-to-back sessions well. Infrared cabins are usually sized for one or two.

A few things worth knowing either way

  • Try before you commit if you possibly can. A gym, spa, or wellness studio session in each type will tell you more than a month of reading.
  • Ask about EMF only for infrared, and ask for published third-party testing, not a brochure claim.
  • Wood matters. Cedar, hemlock, and thermally modified aspen or spruce behave differently in heat and humidity. For outdoor builds especially, ask what the manufacturer expects after ten winters.
  • Warranty length tells you what the maker believes. Read what's covered on the heater specifically — it's the most expensive component to replace.
  • Plan the room, not just the box. Ventilation, drainage, floor protection, and where you'll cool down between rounds all shape whether the space gets used.

The short answer

Choose traditional if you want steam and the classic sauna experience, you're building outdoors, you have or can add the electrical capacity, and the depth of long-term research matters to you.

Choose infrared if you want a gentler, longer, breathable session, you're working with a standard outlet and an indoor room, and shorter heat-up time is what will keep you consistent.

And if you're genuinely torn: the deciding factor is almost never which sauna is better. It's which one is easier for you to use four times a week. Frequency is the variable the research kept pointing to, and it's the one entirely within your control.
